If you download material illegally from the Internet, be prepared to fork out a minimum fine of RM250,000.
This is the warning from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to Malaysians who continue to illegally download songs, videos and the like. Although this penalty was legislated more than 10 years ago under the Copyright Act, it has yet to be fully enforced. Considering that pirated software vendors have are almost non-existent in our regular IT centres, it’s not really surprising that downloaders were next on the list.
According to the report from The Star, If you download material illegally from the Internet, you can be fined a minimum of RM250,000 while the maximum fine is RM500,000.
This is kinda sound ridiculous isn’t it? Who the hell can pay 250K? Maybe they want all teenager and computer geek go into jail? Let do a little calculation, IF 60% of Malaysian population is downloading illegal material. Can the current Malaysian prison hold they all? I think sure not. Anyway what is illegal material? Except from music, movie and software that already being licensed in Malaysia, how bout Anime? Is it illegal to download Anime? How we know what Anime has the rate illegal in Malaysia?
Let say if all Malaysian stop downloading from torrent already. Then how about the price for original software? It is still gonna be the same like now? Then how about poor-people like me? We can`t afford to buy something expensive like that! Let say graphic student need a program like photoshop, did they need to buy the original software that maybe range around RM300++?
Maybe after this we all should change into linux. Let the government lost the income from original software ![]()
